7/20/2007 Emmanuel College Tops Tompkins Tables
(Double first for Emmanuel in Cambridge league table)
Emmanuel College, alma mater of the new James Bond writer Sebastian Faulks, has been ranked as best college at Cambridge for second successive year in the Tompkins Table, which ranks the university's 29 colleges on academic performance . Richard Barnes, senior tutor, praised this year's graduates. "In their first year, they topped the mumps league table for the university and did really badly," he said."They seem to have fought back amazingly. In addition, for a college which was once men only, it now recruits more women than men. Our women do slightly better than the men." The college's strengths have been in engineering, English, medicine and philosophy. This year, of its eight history graduates, six obtained a first. Dr Barnes said the college, which recruits about 60 per cent of its students from the state sector, had also been successful in attracting women graduates into engineering - traditionally a male bastion. One of its female graduates won the Sword of Honour at Sandhurst (beating Prince Harry); another is working for the McLaren Formula One team. Founded in 1584, Emmanuel has been top of the table four times in the past five years (slipping to fifth in 2005).

4/16/2007 Deadliest Campus Rampage in U.S. History
(Injured occupants are carried out of Norris Hall at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., Monday, April 16, 2007. A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 21 people before he was killed, police said. Photo couresy of MSNBC.com.)
At least 33 people, including a gunman, were killed Monday during shootings in a dorm and a building housing classrooms at Virginia Tech, university officials said. The death toll makes the incident the deadliest school attack in U.S. history. Two people were killed at a dormitory about 7:15 a.m., while another 30 people were killed two hours later at Norris Hall, the engineering science and mechanics building, university officials said. Though university police Chief Wendell Flinchum said police were still investigating whether the two incidents were related, he also said the gunman at Norris Hall took his own life. Investigators are not ruling out a second shooter, Flinchum said. "Norris Hall is a tragic and a sorrowful crime scene, and we are in the process of identifying victims," university President Charles Steger said. Asked why the campus, which has more than 26,000 students, was not shut down after the first shooting, Flinchum responded that police received information that "it was an isolated event to that building and the decision was made not to cancel classes at that time." Steger added, "We had some reason to believe the shooter had left campus." Spokespersons for hospitals in Roanoke, Christiansburg, Blacksburg and Salem told CNN they were treating 29 people from the shootings. Sharon Honaker with Carilion New River Medical Center in Christiansburg said one of the four gunshot victims being treated there was in critical condition. Scott Hill, a spokesman for Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, where 17 wounded students were taken, said he wasn't expecting any more victims. The killings mark the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, surpassing attacks at Columbine High School in 1999 and at the University of Texas in 1966. The first reported shootings occurred at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a dormitory that houses 895 students. The dormitory, one of the largest residence halls on the 2,600-acre campus, is located near the drill field and stadium. Amie Steele, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, said one of her reporters at the dormitory reported "mass chaos." The reporter said there were "lots of students running around, going crazy, and the police officers were trying to settle everyone down and keep everything under control," according to Steele. Kristyn Heiser said she was in class about 9:30 a.m. when she and her classmates saw about six gun-wielding police officers run by a window. "We were like, 'What's going on?' Because this definitely is a quaint town where stuff doesn't really happen. It's pretty boring here," said Heiser during a phone interview as she sat on her classroom floor. Another student, Tiffany Otey, said she and her classmates initially thought the gunshots were construction noise until they heard screaming and police officers with bulletproof vests and machine guns entered her classroom. "They were telling us to put our hands above our head and if we didn't cooperate and put our hands above our heads they would shoot," Otey said. "I guess they were afraid, like us, like the shooter was going to be among one of us."

1/30/2007 Microsoft Launches Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 to Consumers Worldwide
(Bill Gates introduces Windows Vista at a celebration in New York., N.Y. Jan. 29, 2007, courtesy of Microsoft)
NEW YORK - Jan. 29, 2007 - On Jan. 30 the most significant product launch in Microsoft Corp.'s history culminates in the release to consumers of the Windows Vista? operating system and Microsoft Office 2007. Starting tomorrow, these two flagship products will be available in more than 70 countries, in 19 languages (with 99 languages anticipated by the end of the year), and at more than 39,000 retail stores and online. The launch marks the achievement of an unprecedented collaboration between Microsoft and its customers and partners, and ushers in an era in which personal computing is easier, safer and more enjoyable than ever before. "Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 will transform the way people work and play," said Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft. "Personal computers have become a key part of the daily lives of almost a billion people worldwide. Millions of consumers had a hand in helping us design, test and create the most exciting versions of Windows and Office we've ever released. Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 squarely address the needs and aspirations of people around the globe." A New Era of Personal Computing Windows Vista and the latest release of Microsoft Office feature dramatic graphic enhancements to the interface that make the desktop more visually exciting and significantly easier to use. With simple and intuitive tools, consumers can easily create and share digital documents, photos, music and videos, participate in digital communities, and play online and offline games. With Windows Vista, consumers will be able to experience all kinds of entertainment - from television to video games to music and movies - how and when they want. Keeping in touch with family, friends and colleagues using e-mail, voice recording or video will be richer and more convenient. Redesigned user interfaces will increase productivity and ease of use, helping consumers and small businesses produce documents - from a marketing plan to a child's birthday invitation - that look better and are more professional in less time. Windows Vista and Microsoft Office 2007 will continue to improve access to information with new tools that make it easy to find the right piece of information - be it an e-mail message, image, note or media clip - no matter where it is stored. The new versions of Windows and Microsoft Office also deliver advances in family safety by empowering parents to better manage and monitor their children's PC and Internet activities. With a few simple clicks in the new Windows Vista Parental Controls center, parents can manage and monitor PC and Internet access, and decide what kinds of TV, music and games are appropriate for their children. Security is also more robust in the new releases. Features such as Windows Defender help protect consumers against attacks from spyware and malicious Web sites, while other enhancements help safeguard personal information. In Microsoft Office 2007, Document Inspector helps clean personal information, comments and hidden text from documents, so families can share their documents with confidence. "These are the most amazing versions of Windows and Office ever," said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft. "The visual effects are spectacular; the navigation is streamlined and intuitive. They make it much easier to protect your PC, yourself and your children online. And they work together to help you accomplish more throughout the day." New Opportunities The consumer launch of Windows Vista is also expected to unleash a flood of new next-generation hardware, software and entertainment devices and services. Currently, more than 1.5 million devices and peripherals are on the market that work with Windows Vista, including more than 2,500 that are Certified for Windows Vista. In addition, thousands of PC manufacturers and system builders around the globe will deliver the Windows Vista operating system and Microsoft Office 2007 on new PCs. "We designed Windows Vista and Office 2007 as springboards for our partners, for realizing the next generation of computing, for a whole new wave of innovation in devices and software that offer better graphics, better connectivity and communications, and a more productive, more enjoyable experience all around," Ballmer said. "Tomorrow's launch will have a dramatic impact on computing long-term." Global Outreach Microsoft also kicked off its global television, Web, and out-of-home and theater advertising campaigns encouraging people to see the "wow" of Windows Vista. The global campaign will reflect the exciting possibilities that Windows Vista will deliver to customers around the world. Microsoft has mobilized employees - including executives, engineers, developers and product managers - to spend the launch day assisting salespeople at retail stores across the United States. Retailers around the world are providing special offers and opportunities to shoppers on the first day of general product availability.

The quad-band GSM (850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz) + EDGE phone also has 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities. Jobs noted 3G capabilities will come in the future. Three smart sensors also help control the iPhone's behavior. A proximity sensor shuts down the display and touchscreen when the phone is held to the ear. An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts screen brightness to save power. Meanwhile, an accelerometer lets the phone know whether to display in portrait or landscape mode. Despite the phone's revolutionary features, Jobs claimed that the phone's strongest feature was its redefinition of how calls are made. "We want to reinvent the phone," Jobs said. "What's the killer app? The killer app is making calls. It's amazing how hard it is to make calls on phones. We want you to use contacts like never before." A Visual Voice-mail feature allows users to skip directly to voice mails they want to hear. An easy-to-use conference call feature lets users connect two calls with one touch of the screen. Text messaging on the iPhone is similar to iChat, with user dialogue encased in bubbles and with familiar iChat sounds, and a touch keyboard appears below for entering text. The iPhone uses its Wi-Fi and EDGE capabilities to automatically connect to the Internet. Internet connectivity includes HTML-capable e-mail that works with any IMAP or POP3 e-mail service. Jobs also announced that Yahoo will offer free push e-mail—similar to the e-mail system on a Blackberry—to all iPhone customers. Apple also included its Safari web browser, and the phone can use its Internet capabilities to view standard Web pages, rather than WAP versions of pages. Integrated Google Maps functionality lets users look up locations, search for local businesses, and view satellite imagery. The iPhone also supports Dashboard widgets, and Apple announced it will include weather and stock widgets. The iPhone's photo management features are equally interesting. Its software enables users to use a "pinching" motion to zoom in and out of pictures, and to orient pictures in standard or landscape mode. When playing music, the iPhone can automatically adjust levels up or down as calls come in. The iPhone will come in two versions: a 4GB, $499 model and an 8GB, $599 model. Both will require a two-year contract with Cingular, the exclusive U.S. carrier. Both models will be available beginning in June from Apple Stores and from Cingular. Jobs said Apple plans to bring the iPhone to Europe in the fourth calendar quarter of 2007, and to Asia in 2008. Jobs also mentioned two accessories for the iPhone: stereo headphones with integrated microphone, and a Bluetooth headset that pairs automatically with the iPhone and goes to sleep to preserve battery life.
Cisco Systems sued Apple Inc. in federal court Wednesday, saying the computer maker's new iPhone violates its trademark. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, came just a day after Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the Apple iPhone in dramatic fashion at a trade show in San Francisco. But even while Jobs was trumpeting the product during his keynote address to Apple faithful, the matter of the product's naming had not been resolved behind the scenes between two of the biggest names in Silicon Valley. San Jose-based Cisco, the world's largest network-equipment maker, has owned the trademark on the name "iPhone" since 2000, when it acquired InfoGear Technology Corp., which originally registered the name. And three weeks ago, Cisco's Linksys division put the trademark to use, releasing an Internet phone called "iPhone" that uses the increasingly popular Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. But on Tuesday, Jobs unveiled Apple's own iPhone, a "game-changing" touch-screen-controlled cell phone device that plays music, surfs the Web and delivers voicemail and e-mail. Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said she could not immediately comment on the lawsuit. Cisco said Tuesday it had been negotiating for several years with Apple over a licensing agreement, but that Apple lawyers had not signed and returned the final contract. "Cisco entered into negotiations with Apple in good faith after Apple repeatedly asked permission to use Cisco's iPhone name," said Mark Chandler, Cisco senior vice president and general counsel, in a statement. "There is no doubt that Apple's new phone is very exciting, but they should not be using our trademark without our permission." Cisco is seeking injunctive relief to prevent Apple from copying Cisco's iPhone trademark. "Today's iPhone is not tomorrow's iPhone. The potential for convergence of the home phone, cell phone, work phone and PC is limitless, which is why it is so important for us to protect our brand," Chandler added.
1/4/2007 SanDisk Releases Flash Hard Drives for Laptops
(SanDisk SSD UATA 5000 1.8, courtesy of SanDisk)
The switch, however, will cost you a few hundred dollars more. SanDisk on Thursday released a 32GB drive for commercial notebooks that stores information on flash memory chips rather than the magnetic platters that make up a traditional hard drive. The drive is available only to manufacturers, and the company declined to give out pricing or identify any notebook makers that will adopt it, but SanDisk said notebooks sporting the drive could come out in the first half of 2007. For the past year or so, flash memory makers have promised to come out with products that will challenge hard drives in notebooks. The debate between flash makers and hard drive manufacturers will be one of the big topics at the Computer Electronics Show and Storage Visions, which both take place next week in Las Vegas. While SanDisk shows off its flash drive there, drive makers will be touting hybrid hard drives. Unlike traditional hard drives, flash memory drives do not contain moving parts. As a result, flash devices are less prone to breaking down - flash cards can survive drops from research balloons - and consume less energy. SanDisk's flash drive can increase battery life by about 10 percent, said Doreet Oren, director of product marketing for SanDisk. Flash also can retrieve data faster. In its own tests, SanDisk says its flash drive can boot up Windows Vista - the next version of the Windows operating system - in 35 seconds, 28 seconds faster than the 55-second boot-up time required with a conventional drive. Military and aerospace customers have been buying so-called solid state flash drives for about a decade. Some have capacities of 256GB and are quite sophisticated. "They are in data recorders in aeroplanes," Oren said. "Breakage sometimes happens with military targets." SanDisk gained the bulk of its expertise in these drives when it acquired Msystems, an Israeli outfit that was an early pioneer of USB flash keys.

Telecommunications across Asia have been severely disrupted because of damage to undersea cables caused by Tuesday's earthquake near Taiwan. Banks and businesses in Taiwan, South Korea, China and Japan reported telephone and internet problems. The earthquake, a magnitude 7.1 according to the US Geological Survey, struck off Taiwan's southern coast Two people were killed and at least 42 injured in the temblor, which shook buildings across the island. The earthquake took place at 2026 (1226 GMT) south-west of Hengchun. It was followed by a number of aftershocks. Japan's Meteorological Agency had warned of a possible localised tsunami heading towards the Philippines, but nothing was later reported. 'Seriously affected' Taiwan's largest telephone company, Chunghwa Telecom Co, said damage to an undersea cable had disrupted 98% of Taiwan's communications with Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong. Repairs could take three weeks, Vice-General Manager Lin Jen-hung said, but quality would improve daily. Telecommunications companies in Hong Kong, Japan and China also reported problems. China's biggest telecoms provider, China Telecommunications Group, said that communications cables to the US and to Europe had been damaged. "Internet connections have been seriously affected, and phone links and dedicated business lines have also been affected to some degree," it said. In South Korea, broadband provider KT Corp said six submarine cables had been affected, interrupting services to customers including banks. Some foreign exchange trading was reportedly affected. "Trading of the Korean won has mostly halted due to the communication problem," a dealer at one South Korean domestic bank told Reuters news agency. Several companies have warned of slow internet access over the next few days. In Taiwan, rescue workers were searching through rubble for people injured in the earthquake. Two members of a family died in Hengchun when their house collapsed, Taiwanese officials said The earthquake came on the second anniversary of the Asian tsunami, which claimed almost 250,000 lives.
12/14/2006 Transistor Breaks Speed Record
Scientists at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign said Tuesday they created a transistor with a frequency of 845 gigahertz, about 20 per cent faster than the 704 GHz speed record they set last year. A gigahertz is a measure of frequency equal to one billion cycles a second. Transistors are small electronic semiconductor devices that can control voltage or current by using a much lower voltage or electrical current. They are used in a wide range of electronic circuits, including computers and cellular phones. Computer microchips use millions of them. The components' construction "enhances the electron velocity, hence, reduces both current density and charging time," said Milton Feng, the Holonyak chair professor of electrical and computer engineering at Illinois. The new transistor, made of iridium phosphide and iridium gallium arsenide, brings the goal of making a terahertz — or one trillion Hertz — transistor within reach, the scientists said. At room temperature, or 25 C, the transistor operates at 765 GHz. The speed increases to 845 GHz when the transistor is chilled to –55 C. Details of the research are to be presented at the International Electronics Device Meeting in San Francisco, which ends Wednesday. The researchers also refined their engineering techniques, making it possible for them to make smaller parts to be used in the transistor. The base is about 12.5 nanometres wide. A nanometre is one billionth of a metre. The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency funded the research, which has applications to "more effective combat systems," according to a statement by the University of Illinois.
12/13/2006 Sony Ericsson's Flagship Store in London
(Sony Ericsson's flagship store on High Street Kensington in heart of central London, photo courtesy of Esato)
This is the first of its kind of store which caters to the needs of Sony Ericsson Lovers and general mobile users alike. Based on the very busy High Street Kensington in heart of central london, its the ideal location for Sony Ericsson to get noticed, so they obviously had a good think about picking this spot, and i have to agree its a good choice. Walking into the store i noticed a Security Guard at the door who was there apparantly to keep an eye on many of the Live handsets which are on display, which visitors are allowed to play with. It's all part of Sony Ericsson's strategy for this store which MD John Harber said he had a "hatred for dummy handsets", adding: 'We've got these little guys making fantastic phones in Lund (HQ in Sweden) and they come over and see us putting these plastic dummies in stores. It doesn't do them justice.' Harber said the store is expecting to lose some handsets to thefts but security barriers and a guard at the front will be put in place. 'We will lose some phones. But the overall benefit is more important.' The decor and look of the store is very fresh and modern with Sony Ericsson Logo's and advertiseing displayed very tastefully. A bank of LCD screens are placed on the walls to the right and left of the entrance doors as you walk in and show continuous adverts for various Walkman phones and handsets. This is the best part, in the centre of the store houses the main console which holds all the "Live" handsets and Walkman phones which are connected to headphones on which you can listen to music on. The varying K800i's James Bond Edition, Allure Brown and Black are placed alongside each other, then moving onto the K610i and P990i onwards. Towards the back end of the store is the seating area for customers and visitors to the store, and its not just any seating area, two glass display cabinets are on the wall which show off Japanese Sony Ericsson Handsets not available outside of japan which is a bit dissapointing because your in a Sony Ericsson store and you can't actually buy them, i actually felt a bit cheated, but never mind maybe someday i thought. All in all Sony Ericsson have got this store just perfect, i would certainly recommend it to anyone, they also say this is the first of many such stores, so look out for one near you in the coming future. (Thanks: fran and Andy)

11/29/2006 Intel Samples 45 Nanometre Parts
ACCORDING TO Reuters, Intel has taped out Penryn and is starting to sample it. These 45 nanometre chips are going to be a shrink of Merom/Conroe/ Woodcrest with some goodies sprinkled on top. We first told you about them a year and a half ago, and not much looks to have changed. The basics are the same as the current core, it is just tweaked. The big thing is that cache will be upped to 6MB from 4, basically they will be catching up to AMD here (Note: I am going to get phone calls over that one...). The other biggie will be the clocks, no not the top end, the dividers. Look for it to be in the 3.46-3.73GHz range when all is said and done, but they will support half-clock dividers. This means instead of the rather absurd 333MHz steps they have now, they can do 166MHz. If you are curious why the current CoreNumberForeignnumber parts go from 1.6 to 3.0GHz, that is because marketing demands 5 SKUs, and without the half step dividers you are looking at 5 * 333 or 5 * 266 for the spread. That will be a thing of the past. The chips are also on the 45nm process, and from all reports, it is going swimingly. Intel is going to drive the mainstream wattage down a bit from 65 to 50W here but we still have a year to go, things may change in the meantime. Where ever it ends up, it will be less power than the 65nm parts. Last up are some new *Ts, most notably Rockton finally pokes it's head above the surface for a look around. The chips will also be a little better, a little more efficient, and fix a few of the warts that CoreDuho had. HT was also back on some roadmaps, but it does not look like that will ever be turned on, but the circuitry seems to be there in one way or another. There are a few things that you won't see this time around, real quad cores and higher FSBs. The Yorktown rumours that were flying around at IDF were and are wrong, there is no converged quad core parts until Nehalem. There are also no plans for a 1600FSB unless something bad happens to Nehalem/CSI, or AMD pressures Intel hard. While the chip may be ready a little earlier, don't expect the process to be pulled in much. Think Q4/07 for a trickle of parts, and Q1/08 for the real volume. Intel pulled in a lot of dates during 2006, but pulling in a combination of process and parts may be a little much to hope for.
11/9/2006 Windows Vista Released to Manufacturing
(Windows Vista will be broadly available on 30 Jan. 2007.)
Yes, you read it right - development of Windows Vista is complete. Want proof? Watch this video and hear it from Jim Allchin himself. Ultimately, we never could have achieved this milestone without you, the enthusiast community, who have played a key role in making this the highest-quality, most secure, most reliable and most usable version of Windows the world has ever seen. You gave us unprecedented support in testing and providing your feedback while we designed, developed and refined Windows Vista - so much so that it has in many ways become a reflection of your involvement. Consequently, you should feel the same sense of accomplishment that we feel today. And just what is this so-called RTM? It's the major milestone where we can confidently say that Microsoft is done with Windows Vista and will be handing it off to our industry partners: PC makers, ISVs and IHVs. They in turn will continue to ramp-up in earnest now that the target is locked - for example, by refining hardware drivers - in order to complete the cycle and make Windows Vista available via retail channels on 30 January 2007. On that date Windows Vista and the 2007 Microsoft Office system will be available to customers around the world. But before we get there, we've got some really, REALLY great things to come, much of which will be disclosed or discussed on this blog - so keep your eyes peeled!
